IHS Zambia receives Award from Zambian President For Community Building Projects

14 March 2017: Chipata, Zambia: IHS Zambia, the Zambian subsidiary of IHS Holding Limited (“IHS”), the largest mobile telecommunications infrastructure provider in Africa, Europe and the Middle East, has received an award from the President of the Republic of Zambia, His Excellency Edgar Chagwa Lungu. The award is in recognition of IHS’ corporate social responsibility programme focused on supporting our local communities and was presented at the Ncwala Ceremony, a traditional ceremony held annually by the Ngoni people to celebrate the first harvests of the year. The ceremony was held in the Mutenguleni Village in the Chipata District in Zambia’s Eastern Province.

IHS’ corporate social responsibility strategy is needs-based and tailored to each country’s operations. We focus on four pillars, namely people – both local communities and employees – education and empowerment, business ethics, and environment and green energy.

One of the most pressing needs in Zambia is access to power for local communities. Through the upgrade of power generation systems at our tower sites, IHS Zambia launched a generator recycling programme at the end of 2016. To date, 12 refurbished generators have been donated to local orphanages, medical clinics and schools that were deemed most in need. By rolling out these 12 refurbished generators, IHS Zambia has enabled over 7,000 individuals to have access to a reliable power source. Variations of this generator recycling programme are also being pursued in Nigeria, Cameroon and Rwanda.

William Saad, Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer of IHS, said:

“We’d like to thank the President of the Republic of Zambia, His Excellency Edgar Chagwa Lungu for his continued support and for the opportunity to celebrate Zambia’s local communities and their traditions. We are committed to improving the lives of the local communities in which we operate - this is at the core of what we do and what we stand for as a business.”

IHS Zambia was incorporated into the IHS portfolio in December 2013, and has since acquired towers from MTN Zambia and Airtel Zambia. Today, IHS Zambia is the market leading tower company in Zambia managing over 1,966 towers throughout the country. IHS Zambia directly and indirectly employs approximately 1,100 Zambians across its in-country operations. Earlier in 2016, IHS Zambia also donated a library and computer lab to the Kamanga School in Lusaka.
