Our history

Founded in 2001, IHS Towers is one of the largest independent owners, operators and developers of shared communications infrastructure in the world. We are the largest independent tower operator in six of the markets in which we operate, and the only independent tower operator in five of these markets, with nearly 39,000 towers in our portfolio.

This is our story. 

Entered South Africa following the closure of a sale and lease back agreement with MTN, under which IHS acquired 5,701 towers.
Completed the TIM Fiber Acquisition with TIM Brazil for the acquisition of existing fiber assets in Brazil.
Listed on the New York Stock Exchange through the completion of our initial public offering ("IPO").
Announced our further expansion in Africa; obtained a license to construct, operate and lease telecom towers in Egypt, and signed an agreement to acquire towers of MTN South Africa.
Completed third and fourth closings of towers in April and October in Kuwait, pursuant to the Kuwait Acquisition.
Expanded our footprint by entering the Middle East through the completion of the Kuwait Acquisition.
Broadened our footprint by entering Latin America through the completion of the Cell Site Solutions (CSS) acquisition, primarily across Brazil, as well as Peru and Colombia.
Refinanced the approximately $1.8 billion outstanding debt of our Nigeria operations including issuing $500 million 7.125% Senior Notes due 2025 and $800 million 8.0% Senior Notes due 2027.
Acquired HTN Towers, under the first tower company-to-tower company transaction in Africa. Issued our debut $800 million 9.500% senior notes due 2021 (now fully refinanced and redeemed in 2019), the largest African corporate high yield bond single issue offering at the time.
Acquired Airtel Zambia’s and Airtel Rwanda’s towers. Further expanded in Nigeria through the acquisition of an additional towers from 9mobile.
Entered Zambia and Rwanda through the acquisitions of MTN’s tower portfolios.
Executed landmark transactions in Nigeria; acquired from MTN Nigeria and 9mobile.
Successfully completed a $2.0 billion equity raise, which was drawn down in 2014 and 2015.
Acquired MTN Côte d’Ivoire’s portfolio and MTN Cameroon’s towers. Completed MLL agreements for Orange Côte d’Ivoire’s tower portfolio and Orange Cameroon’s towers.
Began owning towers and leasing space to MNOs in Nigeria and launched our Colocation service operations.
Launched our Managed Services operations for MNO-owned towers with services including maintenance, security and power supply.
Founded as a builder of communication towers for MNOs in Nigeria; our founders continue to lead the business today.
