May 29, 2025, São Paulo: IHS Brazil, part of the IHS Holding Limited (NYSE: IHS) (“IHS Towers”) group, one of the largest independent owners, operators, and developers of shared communications infrastructure in the world by tower count, has completed the modernization of the Distributed Antenna System (“DAS”) at the Nilton Santos Stadium (Engenhão) in Rio de Janeiro, enabling mobile network operators (“MNOs”) to offer 5G connectivity.
The project integrates state-of-the-art technology, using 5G Massive MIMO antennas to offer high-efficiency, simultaneous communication for a large volume of devices. The upgraded DAS is designed to meet the maximum capacity of the stadium's public areas, including upper and lower stands, VIP areas, boxes and the lawn, significantly helping reduce cellular network congestion.
The new solution includes all of the necessary infrastructure, including fiber optics, technical support and optimization of power distribution, and is fully equipped to help MNOs serve fast and reliable 5G connectivity.
This modernization represents the first complete upgrade of the stadium’s DAS communication system since 2016, when 3G and 4G connectivity services were deployed. IHS Brazil now holds exclusive rights for the stadium’s mobile connectivity infrastructure.
Antonio Maya, CTO, IHS Latam, commented, "This initiative reinforces IHS Brazil's commitment to enabling access to state-of-the-art mobile networks in high-traffic spaces, ensuring a high-performance connectivity experience for fans and visitors".
Alexandre Costa, General Director of Infrastructure and Operations, Botafogo's SAF, commented, "Nilton Santos has always been a symbol of innovation and excellence. With the implementation of the new antenna system, we aim to optimize the operations of mobile operators and transform the fan experience. The modernization will not only broaden connectivity but also help us position the stadium as a center for innovation in sports, ensuring congestion-free connectivity for all".
This upgrade, facilitated with the support of the City Hall of Rio de Janeiro and Botafogo Futebol Clube, helps position the Nilton Santos Stadium as one of the most modern stadiums in Brazil, and reaffirms IHS Brazil's commitment to offering bespoke connectivity solutions for major events.
